How to Get There

We have arranged 3 modes of transport to get you to Alpe d’Huez:

  1. Flight from Gatwick
  2. Eurostar from Waterloo
  3. Snowtrain from Dover

Each type of transport will be accompanied by a Tall Stories rep, who will meet you at check-in and accompany you all the way to Alpe d’Huez.

There are 2 departures from Gatwick: one at 6.30 and one at 9:00.

Eurostar passengers will be charged a supplement of £55 per head

Snowtrain passengers are entitled to a refund of £15 per head

Snowtrain and Eurostar services are subject to availability. Please call Tall Stories to confirm.

There are also flights available from Manchester and Birmingham.

For those people making their own way, we can offer a discount of £75.

By Train

By Plane

With either train you can actually get an extra 2 days skiing if you want. However please note that you will have to pay for an extended lift pass and ski hire. We suggest the 8-day pass option to include both Saturdays. If you get the 6-day pass, upon your arrival you can either:

  • Relax for the day
  • Use the free ski lifts
  • Buy a half-day ski pass (after 12:30) (for about £18).

You can pre-book an 8-day Ski Pass the supplement will be £35.

Couchettes

There are 6 couchettes to a sleeping compartment. Couchettes (will be allocated to all passengers travelling by train. If you wish to share a compartment at on the train please notify Tall Stories of this at the time of booking. We will do our best to accommodate your wish. All other couchette places will be pre-allocated.

If you’ve booked late you may not have any alternative other than to fly, as the trains do fill up early. The flights leave early Saturday morning (and I mean early) from Gatwick. The exact flight times cannot be confirmed until closer to the time (but expect an early morning flight both ends). Last year we flew with Monarch. The flight time is just over an hour, in fact by the time you’ve had your Vodka Martini and your dubious in flight meal it’s time to buckle up for the descent.

The transfer is around 4 hours (landslides permitting).

Advantages

More comfortable and civilised.

In-flight nosh.

The pilot might ask you out for dinner if you’re a lady, or the steward if you’re a guy.

Disadvantages

£14 carriage to pay for your own skis.

More likely to be delayed than the trains.

Longer transfer than the trains.

You have to get yourself to Dover where you will board a ferry at 17:30 on the Friday evening, arriving at Calais at 20.00.

You then identify your baggage and board a train to Chambery where you arrive at 07.30 on the Saturday.

A transfer bus then takes 2 hours to resort.

Advantages

  • With a Disco on board the partying starts early.
  • Delays less frequent than flying.
  • You have to carry luggage a little bit more than the plane, but no charge for ski carriage.

Disadvantages

  • The train can get rowdy (you may not get much sleep).
  • You’ve got to get to Dover, expect to pay £35 to park for the week.
  • You will have to take at least the afternoon off work on the Friday.

This leaves from Waterloo at 16.00 on the Friday evening, arriving at Paris at 20.00

You then have 2 hours to play in Paris (your luggage is guarded for you). At 10:00pm you collect your luggage and board another train for the 10:30pm departure to Chambery (arriving 5:20am).

There is then a 2 hours transfer by bus to resort.
